Fresh Connections in Dutch Healthcare Procurement: Key Takeaways from Our Workshop

Last week, six hospital groups in the Netherlands— Alrijne Zorggroep, Flevoziekenhuis, St Jansdal, and ZGT (Twente), Zorgsaam and our newest member, Zorgservice XL—joined us to share insights on how digital procurement is changing the game. Representing 12 hospitals, or about 15% of all Dutch hospitals, these teams had plenty to say about streamlining the essentials so they can focus on the exciting stuff.

The Highlights

  1. Time Savings: Less Admin, More Wins

By investing just 30–60 minutes weekly on the platform, hospitals are closing more contracts with more suppliers than ever without drowning in admin. And with ZGT now testing the AFAS connection for direct transfer of new pricing and contractual data, they’re expecting even more significant time savings vs regular sourcing, negotiating, contracting and admin processes. For these teams, that means more time to build relationships, strategize, and get to know suppliers’ products better.

  2. Connecting with More Suppliers: The More, the Merrier!

Hospitals shared how the platform is opening doors to a wider network of suppliers and helping them secure new deals more efficiently. By streamlining the master data management and discovery of alternative B, C, and D items, procurement teams now have time to check out new items in supplier catalogues and focus on higher-value products—turning routine purchases into fresh opportunities.

  3. A Fresh Vibe: Attracting Young Talent

Digitalizing processes isn’t just efficient; it’s appealing to a new generation of healthcare talent. Younger professionals appreciate the tech-friendly, future-forward vibe of a hospital that’s committed to smarter, faster procurement. The most successful teams at the hospitals are using their youngest talent to work with the hystrix platform to greatest effect.

As Skott Verschuur from Flevoziekenhuis shared, “Using hystrix, I’m handling up to 40 offer rounds each week—sometimes with new suppliers—all within just 30–60 minutes. It’s transformed my workflow, letting me connect faster and focus on strategic tasks rather than routine admin. And with upcoming digitalization of tasks like year-end indexation, I’m excited to see just how far we can push procurement efficiency.”

This workshop reminded us that digital procurement is helping hospitals work smarter, connect with suppliers more effectively, and spend their time where it really counts.
